14 days to go

Excitement is definitely building - perhaps for some of the wrong reasons. (I feel that unfortunately the press is already trumpeting "defeat", although that is a difficult concept when any progress is welcome, and probable!)
My understanding is that although a formal agreement - or even framework - will not result from this conference, significant efforts are being made to make progress, and we must look to a further 12-18 months before significant legal structures and intrusnments can be anticipated.
For instance, the African Group, representing some of the Least Developed Countries (LDC), are understandably extremely keen on obtaining meaningful emission cuts by the Annex 1 countries, but funding mitigation and adaptation to the tune of ~$160Bn remains a major stumbling block.
We must anticipate that there is a real will to progress, and at this stage, anticipate President Obama's possible presence may provide some additional push - even without a formal US agreement.

  1. Hi Pete, good for you getting a blog organised so early! From where I sit it is going to be important to get some positive messages coming out of Copenhagen about the world community's will to move forward on climate change. In many ways I feel we are fortunte as part of the ngo delegation, as many creative constructive suggestions for real timely action will come people representing their own communities.
    Where there's a Will, there's a Way!
cheers, see you over there if not before

  2. We need to start somewhere, I agree there. Even Aus got its ETS up! Now all that needs to be done is get some reasonable targets for it in due course. Remember I found this in a link, you may want to post it on your blog:

On December 7 2009, world leaders are gathering in Copenhagen as a
United Nations initiative to discuss and agree a world response
to the problem of Climate Change.

Check out Tck Tck Tck at http://tcktcktck.org/ where you can sign
the petition to be presented by Kofi Annan to the world leaders
encouraging them to agree a sustainable objective.

I am committed to having 1,000,000 Australians sign the petition in
the next 30 days and I am asking for your support in this.

The Climate Justice organisers behind the TckTckTck campaign have said
that 1 million Australians will put Australia way ahead of other countries
in making our voice heard and our opinion known on a world stage.

Through the support of News Digital Media we will be able to track
how many Australians sign the petition in real time.

I believe that this is a great opportunity for every Australian
to make a difference. Too often in regards to climate change,
individuals feel powerless but here is an opportunity for individuals
to lead our leaders to a sustainable future.

It is also an opportunity for corporate Australia to take a
leadership stance on this issue. I have secured the support of
News Digital Media to support the campaign through their extensive
online presence that reaches 12 million Australians, but we need more
support to our achieve our 1,000,000 objective.

  3. I also think it is a great idea to set up this blog for COP-15 to get immediate news and views from people on the scene. I am keen to hear whether COP 15 is a done deal before the event or whether there is a possibility of making any effective changes during the event. In any case it will be exciting to be on the spot when history is made, in hopefully a positive way.
